Used in a wide variety of HVAC&R equipment, refrigerants originally contained substances such as hydrocarbons, ammonia, carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). They were used for their efficient, non-flammable and non-toxic benefits. During the 1990s, CFCs and HCFCs began to be phased out for the rise of hybrid fibre coaxial (HFCs). HFCs have zero ozone depletion potential, however contain the downside of significant global warming potential (GWP). The international focus on global warming has now led to the development of low GWP refrigerants.
